StoneFly Expands Hardware-Enabled Block Level AES 256 Volume Encryption to Software-Defined Unified Storage™

Latest version of StoneFusion operating system supports fully-encrypted data on virtual IP SAN appliances.

Hayward, Calif. – February 11, 2013 — StoneFly, Inc., a leading supplier of integrated IP storage area network (SAN) systems and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Dynamic Network Factory, Inc. (DNF), today launched a new release of its legendary StoneFusion™ operating system that extends its proven hardware-enabled block level AES 256 volume encryption feature to StoneFly’s Software-Defined Unified Storage™ (SDUS) products. Volume encryption is now available across StoneFly’s entire product line.

By sending encrypted data over the local area network (LAN) or the wide area network (WAN) during replication, StoneFusion ensures that data travels rapidly across the wire, remaining both fully protected and fully encrypted. This approach makes use of the advanced AES 256 encryption algorithm, a standard adopted by the U.S. government, and enables StoneFly to efficiently deliver both encrypted and non-encrypted volumes to the same remote SAN. Competing volume encryption solutions require the data be encrypted a second time when the data arrives at the remote SAN, which severely decreases performance.

StoneFly began shipping physical IP SAN appliances with hardware-enabled block level volume encryption in Q1 2011. Over the course of the last two years, StoneFly’s substantial encryption capabilities have reinforced the company’s tradition of delivering the highest levels of data protection combined with best-in-class storage performance. Now StoneFly has expanded its volume encryption technology to also support its patented Software-Defined Unified Storage products.

At the core of StoneFly’s Software-Defined Unified Storage products is Storage Concentrator Virtual Machine (SCVM™), a Virtual IP Storage Software Appliance that creates a virtual network storage appliance using the existing resources of your virtual server. This virtual IP storage platform for VMware and Hyper-V environments provides an advanced, fully featured iSCSI SAN and NAS within a VMware or Hyper-V virtual machine.

Using this same technology is StoneFly’s USS and USS-HA series of Unified Storage & Server appliances. These unified storage and server appliances are the ideal solution to consolidate your datacenter into one redundant and highly available appliance. Use of virtualized operating systems allow for complete hardware utilization and considerable reduction in power and cooling costs. USS appliances scale up to 96 drives per appliance, while USS-HA scales up to 6.2 PetaBytes of storage and feature the ultimate in high-availability with dual Storage Concentrators and active/active RAID controllers.

“Over the last 2 years, StoneFly’s volume encryption technology has demonstrated its ability to not only keep data secure, but also greatly increase system performance when the encrypted data is written to the disks,” says Mo Tahmasebi, president and CEO for StoneFly. “We are excited to bring this superior data security and market-leading performance feature to our Software-Defined Unified Storage products.”

Ideal for applications in medical, finance and government, StoneFly IP SANs offer compliance with patient privacy and data control measures for HIPAA, JCAHO, Medicare and Medicaid, along with PCI and GLBA compliance for the financial industry. The upgraded StoneFusion release provides added value to data-intensive installations in these markets, where minimizing performance degradation during encryption is critical.

StoneFly’s comprehensive advanced feature software packages for its Software-Defined Unified Storage products include asynchronous replication (one-to-many and many-to-one), thin provisioning with space reclamation, NAS (support for CIFS and NFS protocols), snapshot, real-time synchronous mirroring of iSCSI volumes and nodes (campus mirroring), and multi-site replication.
