iSCSI Case Studies
searchStorage.com - Tuesday, November 25, 2008
IP SAN adoption is growing among users who want storage that's easy to install, configure and manage, and also comes at a price considerably less than that of Fibre Channel SANs.
iSCSI can also be implemented with gateway technology in which an iSCSI controller attaches to a block-level storage array, thus enabling iSCSI transport. Examples of gateway-enabled iSCSI products are available from Reldata Inc. and StoneFly Inc.

Storage Projects Rise in Importance
New York Times - Wednesday, January 02, 2008
Other industries are also swimming in storage-hungry data. Capitol Broadcasting Co. (CBC), a Raleigh, N.C.-based operator of five TV stations and several radio assets, is grappling with a 120% growth in e-mail volume and a wealth of media-rich graphics, audio and video files that reside on its networks.
"While e-mail archiving was the catalyst to move beyond DAS, other looming IT challenges were also driving the need for more robust storage," explains Chris Welty, a CBC systems engineer. The company is moving to IBM's BladeCenter architecture and has purchased an IP SAN from StoneFly Inc. in Hayward, Calif., in a further effort to provide single-instance storage on file servers, Welty says.

Storage Alphabet Soup: Of DAS, NAS and SANs
Network Centric Security - Friday, August 31, 2007
A NAS looks like a file folder to a user or camera, said Jame Ervin at Stonefly Networks. That's a potential disadvantage: many devices can store data in it, but it's slower at retrieving data. So for larger surveillance networks, a storage area network might be the better fit.
A SAN is a network of hard disks devoted to storage, analogous to a file cabinet with many files in several drawers, so storage can be shared across devices and users. This flexibility enables users to partition a SAN so that data from a particular camera or surveillance area is written to a specific area on the SAN, Ervin said.

Eliminating Physical Infrastructure Dependence to Manage Servers and Storage Networks Centrally

Follow-up disk-to-tape backups are completely transparent to the user. "I can do the backup from the snapshot at 2 a.m. when it doesn't affect anybody," he said.
Polymenakos said there hasn't been a failure in eight months. Total backup time has been cut by perhaps 90 percent, he estimated.

Construction Company Works From IP-SAN Blueprint
Storage PipeLine - Friday, January 30, 2004
Ken Marsh knows stress. He once worked as a 911 dispatcher. But now as the IT manager for construction company T.B. Penick & Sons, San Diego, Calif., he recalls coming into the office to find a line of people waiting outside his door. The network was down and they couldn't get e-mail.
After too many mornings like that, Marsh convinced his boss to spend the money to upgrade the company's data center. In addition to seven servers with Windows 2003 servers with dual Active Directory, Microsoft Exchange and a couple of SQL servers, Marsh said the IP-SAN they implemented at the same time provides the connectivity among the servers and has vastly improved performance.

California Utility Improves Performance With iSCSI
Storage PipeLine - Friday, November 07, 2003
When Contra Costa Water District tested its direct-attached storage architecture for data recovery earlier this year, the utility made a disturbing discovery: in the event of a real storage failure, it would take three weeks to restore all of its systems and data. "The business wouldn't tolerate that," said Jim Morton, IS manager for CCWD. So after visiting several organizations that were running iSCSI, CCWD opted for an iSCSI-based SAN that could slide right into its new Gigabit Ethernet backbone. The backbone was roomy enough for the storage network, which is physically separate from the core network.

While low cost is the leading factor in the decision to choose IP instead of Fibre Channel, a few users also cite block-level I/O performance over long distances and Ethernet's simplicity and flexibility for upgrading. For California's Contra Costa Water District (CCWD), price was the overwhelming factor in choosing an IP SAN, according to Jim Morton, CCWD's IS manager. At the heart of its IP SAN, CCWD uses StoneFly Networks' i1500 Storage Concentrator, a storage provisioning appliance. The company uses it as an IP receiver attached to an ATA-based RAID array from Nexsan Technologies. The hosts include a Dell Power-Edge 2650 2RU running Windows 2000, two IBM X360 P4 servers (for Windows 2000 and Linux/Oracle 8i), and an HP NetServer LH3000R P3 running Windows 2000 and Exchange.

StoneFly announces next-generation Storage Concentrator
Computerworld - Friday, October 10, 2003
The Storage Concentrator i3000 combines Advanced Technology Attached RAID storage with storage provisioning engines and uses an Internet SCSI (iSCSI) protocol router/bridge for synchronous replications over metropolitan-area networks or asynchronous data replication over unlimited distances using an Ethernet network. Ken Walters, senior director of enterprise platforms at Public Broadcasting Service in Alexandria, Va., currently uses two of Stonefly's i2000 model storage consolidators to pool storage on his SAN, which is supported by an IBM Shark storage array. But Walters wants to create a business continuity and disaster recovery architecture using the new i3000.

Microsoft Spurs iSCSI Adoption
InfoStor - Friday, August 22, 2003
The Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) has been using beta versions of Microsoft's iSCSI drivers since March. PBS built an IP SAN based on the software drivers and StoneFly Networks' iSCSI-based i1500FS Storage Concentrators to link "stranded servers" to a Fibre Channel SAN. According to Ken Walters, senior director of enterprise platforms at PBS, the key goals behind implementing the IP SAN were reduced costs, improved data availability, and storage centralization.
"iSCSI solved the 'stranded servers' dilemma we faced." Walters said. "We had none of the incompatibility problems with iSCSI that we had with the Fibre Channel SAN [which was installed almost three years ago]," says Walters.

E-mail: It's worse than you think
Storage Magazine - Wednesday, August 13, 2003
It's official: Nothing beats e-mail. According to a 2003 study by Meta Group, 80% of businesspeople say e-mail is more valuable to them than the telephone. And just like phone networks, e-mail systems experience enormous strains behind the scenes that may cause problems--but users don't want to hear about it. They just go berserk when their e-mail systems don't work. In countless organizations, IT managers express frustration that something as mundane as e-mail seems to take so much of their time. "I spend at least two hours every day dealing with Exchange in some way," says Mike Wolf, manager of technical services for LifeCare, in Westport, CT, a fast-growing insurance administration company that specializes in long-term care services for HR departments. "Our information store went down a week ago, and I was here until 4:00 in the morning." The solution Wolf implemented is a storage concentrator from IP storage vendor StoneFly Networks, in San Diego, CA, which circumvents the usual objection to e-mail SANs--too much expense for an application that's less than mission-critical--by using Gigabit Ethernet and iSCSI-based storage.

Can tools streamline provisioning?
Storage Magazine - Monday, August 11, 2003
Provisioning definitions range from tightly focused concepts to pie-in-the-sky promises. Bill Huber, the CTO of San Diego-based StoneFly Networks, defines provisioning simply as having volume management capabilities-- where volume management gives users the ability to create arbitrary size volumes anywhere out of anything in the storage pool. Veritas, on the other hand, takes a more expansive view of provisioning. Kevin Coughlin, the senior product manager for Veritas' SANPoint Control, expands the definition of provisioning to include not just storage, but computing resources as well.

IP SANs take their place
Storage Magazine - Tuesday, July 22, 2003
Until recently, a SAN meant FC networks. In February after approximately three years of deliberation, the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) approved the iSCSI specification, which is a protocol for block-level storage over IP. iSCSI will go a long way toward enabling IP-based SANs that can rival FC SANs, and it gives enterprises new SAN networking options. Already, midsized organizations such as Southern Insurance Underwriters, Mapics Inc. and Buckeye Color Labs are turning to IP to boost their storage networking.

Microsoft ships free iSCSI drivers
InfoStor - Friday, July 11, 2003
Last week, Microsoft announced the availability of its iSCSI software initiator package, which includes a software driver and initiator service. The software works with Windows 2000 client and server versions, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 and is available for free download at www.microsoft.com/downloads. The Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) is one of the early users of a beta version of Microsoft's iSCSI drivers. PBS built an IP SAN based on Microsoft's drivers and StoneFly Networks' iSCSI-based i1500FS Storage Concentrators in order to link "stranded servers" to a Fibre Channel SAN.

Microsoft Will Drive iSCSI Closer
eWeek - Thursday, July 03, 2003
Microsoft Will Drive iSCSI Closer The road to iSCSI deployment got a bit smoother when Microsoft released its iSCSI driver for Windows Server 2003, Windows 2000 and Windows XP Professional. The release of a driver is seldom front-page news, but in this case, the release of Microsoft's iSCSI driver means hardware and software engineers have one less variable to worry about when doing interoperability tests. (The driver can be downloaded from article.)

Who Says You Can't Afford a SAN or Two?
Intergrated Solutions - Thursday, June 19, 2003
With the iSCSI (Internet SCSI) specification now secure, you can confidently build IP-based storage networks. Never had a SAN in the plan? Think again! If your organization is a small to midsized enterprise, chances are your IT resources aren't unlimited. No company's are. Unfortunately, your rapidly accumulating corporate data is raising red flags in terms of your storage infrastructure's flexibility and scalability. Given all of the direct attached storage hanging off your servers, you can't access half of the capacity that's sitting out there. Not only that, but your backup/restore operations are taking way too long and are threatening uptime.

iSCSI gains a toehold in SAN market
InfoStor - Friday, April 25, 2003
Few storage technologies have shown as much promise - and inflated expectations as iSCSI. It's no secret end user adoption is less than original expectations but that situation is changing - rapidly. In February, the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) ratified the iSCSI standard. More importantly, Microsoft announced it will supply free iSCSI software drivers. Early users report positive results. Low cost was one of the reasons for adoption by Southern Insurance Underwriters Inc., in Alpharetta GA. SIU opted for an iSCSI SAN based on StoneFly Network's Storage Concentrator.

Such a deal: Storage on Sale
Insurance & Technology Online - Monday, March 31, 2003
There is a large drive to remove paper from all parts of the insurance process. The move to a paperless policy has all areas of an insurance company increasing their use of digital media. But, as storage needs grow, IT budgets are shrinking and the growth in storage demand is far outpacing the growth of IT budgets. Luckily, newer and cheaper storage solutions that deliver functionality almost as good as the traditional fibre-channel, high-speed storage arrays are hitting the market...

iSCSI - a Quick Fix for Insurance Firm
Computerworld - Thursday, February 20, 2003
When Safeco Corp.'s business-insurance division almost ran out of available storage capacity on three Compaq ProLiant servers last fall, a storage-area network (SAN) consolidation project that would give the machines additional resources was still more than six months away. ISCSI turned out to be a quick, but scalable, fix. The native iSCSI device that the insurance and financial services firm installed consists of an appliance with proprietary storage software that IP SAN appliance start-up StoneFly Networks Inc. developed and attached to an array of Advanced Technology Attachment-based disk drives made by Nexsan Technologies Inc. in Woodland Hills, Calif.

iSCSI SANs are Approaching Market Readiness
Aberdeen Group - Tuesday, October 01, 2002
Previously unknown companies are poised to bring SAN technology to the marketplace, using cost effective iSCSI networking components and Advanced Technology Attachment disk drives. If, because they will not dare risk their high-margin FC SAN business, the established storage and platform vendors are reluctant to introduce low-cost iSCSI SANs, they had better be prepared to be eventually attacked from below by the new-wave SAN vendors. The new wave is coming.
